8 Jan - Intermission

No walks today, but a couple of photographs from a previous walk.

I passed Southam Holy Well on 6 January, but did not put a picture of it in this blog.  The well was 'tidied up' a few years ago, with the older metal railings replaced by wooden posts and nearby trees removed. Have to say I preferred the older arrangement, with crab apples bobbing in the pool in the autumn.

The pictures below are from October 2006.

The history of the well is unknown, other than it was possibly mentioned in an early medieval document.

The age of the carved faces is unknown. Are they seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteen century?
I have wondered if that they are a Victorian creation and not as old as they look.
This small image is from a map of the Stoneythorpe estate dated 1754. It shows the well as a substantial structure then, and with three spouts - meaning the three faces are at least 260 years old?

That's all for today. Still 985.7 miles to go, and 1.2 miles behind schedule!

Thanks for reading. Do take a look at my JustGiving page if you haven't looked at it before.
